  • Wiped away the old NVIDIA drivers/software and did a clean install of the driver only.
  • The FRAPS readouts matched the Steam readout.
  • Downloaded FRAPS and used it instead of the built-in FPS tool w/ Steam.
  • Here's a list of some of the things I've tried:
  • Dead Island at 1440 X 900: 10-15 FPS and stuttering with some mouse lag.
  • Dead Island at 1920 X 1080: 5-10 FPS and lots of stuttering and mouse/keyboard lag.
  • Dead Island on old PC: 40-50 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900.
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 at 1600 X 900: 50-60 FPS and pretty smooth.
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 on the old PC: 90+ FPS at the highest settings (game came out like 10 years ago).
  • Civ5 on 1440 X 900: much better in that it starts at 60 FPS, but like the others, begins dropping after a few minutes, just not as far.
  • Civ5 on 1920 X 1080: like with default settings, starts at ~ 35 FPS and starts dropping immediately.
  • Game play is fairly smooth as long as I'm not scrolling the map.
  • Civ5 on default settings: starts at ~35 FPS and drops until it's under 20.
  • Civilizations 5 on old PC: 40-50 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900.
  • CoD4MW 19: 10-15 FPS and a lot of stutter.
  • CoD4MW w/ default settings: 10-15 FPS and a lot of stutter.
  • CoD4MW on old PC: 50-60 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900.
  • RAGE 1920 X 10 X 900 : runs the same as the default settings.
  • RAGE w/ default settings: 25-35 FPS, but ran pretty smooth.
  • RAGE on old PC: 50-60 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900.
  • Skyrim 1920 X 1080: 12-15 FPS with less stuttering but with terrible mouse and keyboard lag.
  • Skyrim w/ default setting: 8-12 FPS and lots of stuttering and lag.
  • Skyrim on old PC: 40 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900.
  • Note that I tested each game by first letting the game choose the graphics setting, then I tested it again on the lowest settings at 1920 X 10 X 900. I then started downloading and testing some of the other games I have to see what my FPS looks like with them.

I figured it was a driver issue, so I uninstalled all NVIDIA software and drivers and did a clean install of the drivers, but that didn't help.

The problem seems to occur no matter what resolution I run the game at or if I push the graphic settings to the lowest available. Getting into a car is even worse, with FPS readings between 5 and 10, and at that rate it's impossible to play. When I start up a game (at 1920 X 1080 with Normal settings), the FPS is around 120 and the game plays smooth as butter, but as soon as I start moving it begins to drop until it's in the 15-20 range. I noticed almost immediately that my FPS with GTA V was extremely low. For most games, I could play on normal settings and get 30+ FPS, and I was happy with it. My old machine did a serviceable job running games, and I was getting about 30 FPS on Grand Theft Auto 5 running at (mostly) high settings with 1440 X 900 resolution. I just purchased a new Alienware X51 R2 to replace an older model Alienware with a Radeon card that I bought in 2012.
